Living a digital lifestyle as an expat in Bali...

Living a digital lifestyle as an expat in Bali...

We were well on our way in our digital online business when the global event hit. Our security had already been tested when we lost our business and home.

Our back story....

Who would ever have thought that we would be in the digital world? And also to be in that world in Bali? We are products of the 50's where not even word processing was invented when we went to school. To learn the technological skills required to become an online business entrepreneur has been a challenge but one that we have relished. After many years in bricks and mortar businesses, we knew we had to make a massive change.

Our previous two businesses secured for us all the beautiful things in life – luxury house, cars, holiday home and travel abroad.   Unfortunately for us, the unthinkable happened when our hospitality business closed due a redevelopment of the property and this made us broke.     We lost our home, our cars, our superannuation – we could not have worked any harder – but we still lost it all AND at an age when we should have been setting up for retirement.    Sadly it is a story that is very familiar to others in the hospitality sector in Perth.

It was during this time of despair that we discovered the world of online business and thankfully we were well on our way when the global health crisis hit.

Given that we now longer had a property of our own to live in in Perth and given how expensive it is to live in Australia, we decided to divide our time between living with family for a period and living in Bali for a period. We have been coming to Bali for over 40 years and has always had an attraction for us. The weather suits us just fine and not having to endure winters in Perth is amazing.

Sadly, upon our arrival in January 2020, the world health crisis took us all by surprise. No longer could we take travelling back and forth to Perth for granted. If we had to return to Perth at any time we would have had to go into two weeks quarantine in a hotel. This is absolutely essential and we recognise this but for us it was more sensible to remain in Bali. Luckily, the Indonesian authorities have allowed automatic visa extensions whilst all travel has been but into hibernation.

How the Health Crisis is Affecting Bali

As soon as Australia issued the requirements for self isolation and all the other requirements to see the country through the crisis, we adopted the same measures in Bali. Keeping to our villa, only venturing out to buy groceries (no toilet paper shortages here). Sadly, as the borders were closed in Bali and visitors stopped arriving, the population of Bali started to lose work. These poor people do not have the luxury of government assistance and now there are many thousands of people struggling to feed themselves and their families. In addition, with no hotels open for business, the agriculture industry has stopped - there is no need for the fruits and vegetables grown specifically for the tourist industry and so the villages responsible for this industry are suffering.

Wash Your Hands!

The message to wash hands, social distancing and temperature checks is the same here in Bali as it is in many other countries. The local Banjars are supervising their villages to ensure that people do the right thing - unfortunately there are a few foreigners that are completely ignoring their request. The saddest thing of all is that all beaches Bali-wide have been closed - no walking, no surfing and no family gatherings. We are all waiting for the announcement that they will allow us back to the beach - albeit in smaller numbers. We have no access to our yoga classes, no massages and very very few cafes open for business.

Traffic

Possibly the only thing that is a positive whilst we are in this situation is that the roads are much much safer when travelling on the scooter. Where once you would be travelling 5 abreast, you now find you are the only bike on the road in the middle of the day.

We are all doing our bit to keep Bali free of disease and also helping in some small way to help villagers get access to food.

Animals

Please spare a thought for the thousands of Bali dogs and cats. With tourism, there were always people feeding the dogs on the beaches and in some cases it may have been their only food and now this has gone. The Balinese are barely able to feed themselves and so their animals go hungry with them.

Life goes on for us, we concentrate on building our business in affiliate marketing sector which we can do from anywhere we like provided we have our laptop.

We hope life will soon return to normal for the wonderful people of Bali.
