We had been working in our hospitality business for 13 years (a suburban pub), and throughout those 13 years, I knew this was not for me (Jill) but Nev absolutely loved it and was very good at it. It was a constant battle in Western Australia with the economy one minute being very buoyant and then in a downward trend. But we thought if we worked hard, we would eventually be granted a new lease which would allow us to sell the pub, recoup what we had put into the business and then retire.
And before we knew it, after working 14 hour days 7 days a week, the rug was pulled out from beneath us.
If I am honest, I should have called it quits years before all this happened because the whole thing just did not resonate with me but I did not have the courage to raise the issue and just kept plodding along.
I knew deep down, one day, I would do something about this feeling, and do something with the business and the constant thoughts of not working in an unfulfilling job every day, but the decision was made for us.
But before all of this happened, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and with only one day off for surgery, I continued on day after day.
Then some time later, Nev was found in his car, with the motor running, in a car park in an inner city suburb and had no idea where he was and why he was there. I was in Melbourne at a training course and after a telephone conversation with him I knew something was very wrong. I thought he was having a stroke. I had to get my family to find him and take him to emergency. With me being away for two days, he had to run the pub on his own and the years of stress just piled in. He was diagnosed with Trans Global Amnesia – a very rare disorder – caused by stress if there are no underlying brain issues. Scans showed that his brain was still in working order so they put it down to stress. This had to tell us something.
But guess what? We still didn’t get the message.
As a result of all of the above and the impending loss of our business, our home, our cars and all of our superannuation - and in a fit of despair, I was searching YouTube for inspiration (which I have never done before) when I discovered exactly what I had been searching for.
I found an education program that showed how to start a business online, with step-by-step tutorials to guide you to do exactly that.
I was hooked and so we started right there and then.
We were never phased by people that said Mentors (formerly Six Figure Mentors) was a scam and we found as many, if not more people singing their praises.
The key for us is that we now have the exact thing we signed up for – a step by step education program that showed us how to go back into business – but this time online. It has been a godsend. Living our lives in the way that we never dreamed of and so our retirement and income is now secure.
